Chapter Nine – Luke

Her lights are on, but I haven't seen any movement in the last hour. My butt's been planted at the kitchen table, staring longingly at her window. My mouth still has a sour distaste from learning Donovan fathered another child. I feel for Hunter, knowing he's only a few floors away, preying on other vulnerable women.

The woman in the parking lot's circumstances is none of my business. I feel good that I spoke up when the opportunity was presented.

Hunter is all of my business. She's reignited my primal need to protect her and ease the sorrow she feels at the loss of my parents. I've been unwilling to give much thought to her affair, or dive into the root of her sorrow. Having met Donovan, he's an easy excuse for her behavior.

My anxious behind rises from the chair, walking into the backyard to peek into her kitchen. She probably fell asleep on the couch, the stress of the last week adding to her overtaxed body. As kids, we used to come and go from each other's homes without a thought. I'll knock quietly on her back screen door, just to ensure her safety.

My heart melts with compassion, her sweet sleeping body exactly where I expected to find her. I quietly open the patio slider and step softly into the kitchen, walking lightly into the family room. There's enough room around her knees for me to sit on the edge, my needy lips cherishing hers with a brush of protection.

"Hey, beautiful," I murmur, gently stroking her arm while she blinks open impossibly gorgeous eyes.

"Hi," she smiles, shifting fully onto her back and taking both of my hands to her warm belly.

"The babies are happy to see you."

I gape in pure wonder, feeling tiny movements flutter across her skin.

"Sorry I couldn't do dinner. I wasn't sure how the call with my Mom was going to turn out."

"What did they say?"

"They're flying in Monday. They expect me to move to Florida with them."

She can't. Not when her love is the only reason I haven't completely lost my mind.

"Are you going?" my shaky voice asks, our fingers weaving together as the weight of her decision looms heavy on our hearts.

"I don't know."

Her eyes turn down, fear striking my chest. She couldn't look me in the eye. That means yes.

"I don't want you to leave, Hunter, not when we're finding our way back into each other's hearts and souls. You have me, and Archer. We'll do whatever it takes to support you every step of the way."

The harsh reality is, only her mother can provide the love and care babies need. Archer and I are a poor substitute for the twenty-four-seven nurturing ability of her parents.

"Will you promise me something?" I ask in a hushed voice, tears hovering in her lost eyes.

"Anything."

"You won't leave without saying goodbye. The parting kiss we shared moments before I walked up the gangway got me through many lonely nights. I need to have that memory again if you leave.
